JOHN WILLIAMS CENTER FOR
NOT DOING SOMETHING ELSE

(here's the new one)

WARNING: CAUTION: DANGER: ICK: All of these pages are out of date because I've been busy working on the New EE Department Pages, a web site at Delmarva power, starting a new job, allegedly finishing school, etc. Vile and crufty HTML lurks here, along with many misguided gifs. Come back in a century or a month or a week or so and I'll have all the ugliness removed. Or poke around now if you can bear it.

Browser Notes: These pages tend to be optimized for the Mac version of Netscape, 16 bit color and 72 dpi. They should also look good in various other browsers, though. AOL's browser often mutilates my pages. It is most evil, therefore.

<GRIPE> I hate SGMLs. Someone needs to write a free, creator-controlled page design language that doesn't use stupid text tags. My spelling checker is getting full of trash. </GRIPE>

Misc. Highlights:
Impatient people can jump to the following links instead of finding them in the page below:

New things: lame zen.

This page last significantly altered on 30 May 1996. Egad.

Poetry

William Blake

I tend to like oddballs... people like Gertrude Stein and William Blake, Vali Myers, Robert Anton Wilson and Samuel R. Delany. One thing i like about William Blake is his Illustrated Songs of Innocence and Experience, which i hope to get online soonish, but i have to deal with image copyright legalities first. (The original images are in the public domain, but the reprints in books are not.) If all else fails, i'll just have the text versions.

Lewis Carroll

Jabberwocky is the first poem iever memorized. Hmm.... maybe the only one. Also interesting is what the Apple Newton does to it: Newtonwocky. I once translated Jabberwocky into C code...maybe if i find it i'll put it here. Also see the gender-free pronoun version of Alice in Wonderland . The poems in it mostly work fine with the GFPs, but one poem near the end depended on the gender information so it gets confused a little.

Movies

Brazil gets my vote for the best movie ever made. I've seen it over a dozen times, and i normally don't like seeing any movie twice. And each time i see it, i see something new. The FAQ below lists some things that i didn't catch, like the lyrics to the title song, but there's a lot more to the movie than is found in the FAQ. The Brazil Frequently Asked Questions.

Other favorite movies, in no particular order: Hair (different from the theater version, but both are excellent), Picnic at Hanging Rock, Mystery Train, Labyrinth, Housekeeping, THX-1138, Bliss, Ghostbusters, Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, Pink Floyd: The Wall (despite blatant rip-off from The Who's Tommy), Blade Runner (the Director's Cut), Spinal Tap. I've probably forgotten some; others i might not like so much if i were to see them again. So it goes. If you like many of these and know other movies i should see, feel free to email me ( disabled ).

Language

Neologism, also known as "coining", is the creation of new words such as Lewis Carroll did in Jabberwocky. Some people on (and off) the net are using gender-free pronouns, which i'm in the process of making a web-based Gender-Free Pronoun FAQ about. Also see the gender-free pronoun version of Alice in Wonderland . I may make another compendium of the neologisms sometime in the future. In the meantime, check out the fabulous Jargon File, which has hundreds of computer-related neologisms.

Art

Possibly later this summer i will install some paintings i've done, and Maybe some that Michael Griffen has done. Have to find the slides first.

In the meantime, see my Art & Photography page. Includes some images. Also see Liz's poetry pages (see above), which i added background patterns to.

Music

I have not yet learned to play anything, despite interest in drums and keyboard, so all i've got here is Things I Like. I may try to make it more interesting later. Or i may not. Might add things for some bands i know in Washington.

Jodawi

I have a BS in physics from the University of Puget Sound.

I have half an MS in electrical engineering (ack! yuck! gasp!) from the University of Delaware Electrical Engineering Department, and half an MS in computer science (whee! yum! gasp!) from the University of Delaware Computer Science Department. The latter will likely be whole soonish, the former has been put down.

You can reach me at disabled , should you have something to say.
